Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) - Youth

The Golden Triangle Gun Club is home to the Lead It Rain SASP Team. SASP is a youth shooting organization that involves steel plate shooting with both rifles and handguns. The goal of SASP is to instill in young people personal values and character traits for:

  • Fair play
  • Compassionate understanding
  • Individual responsibility
  • Sportsmanship
  • Self-discipline
  • Personal commitment

Lead It Rain shoots rimfire rifles and pistols, both with and without optics. Athletes can compete with one of these options up to all four.

Equipment Overview:

  • Any semi-automatic rimfire pistol with a detachable magazine, either with or without optics.
  • Any semi-automatic rimfire rifle with a detachable magazine, either with or without optics.
  • Each athlete will need five magazines for each of their disciplines.
  • Eye and ear protection will be required.

Courses of Fire Overview:

  • Each stage consists of five steel targets that are shot for time with time penalties for misses.
  • Scoring is based on time with penalties for missed targets.
  • Targets are shot from a fixed position while standing at a table / bench.
  • Stages have a field of fire between 12 and 32 feet wide, 50 feet long with the five steel plates positioned within this field of fire.
  • A match will typically consist of 3-5 stages.
  • Athletes will shoot five strings at each stage for time, with the slowest timed string being discarded.
  •  The SASP provides state, regional, and national championship matches for its athletes.

Additional Information:

  • Lead It Rain will shoot 1-2 open matches and will shoot the Texas State match each year.
  • Match entry fees are typically $30-35 per gun.
  • Several special offers are provided to SASP members by for the discounted purchase of firearms and ammunition.
  • Athletes can complete in International Air Rifle and Air Pistol matches through SASP. These events are shot at 10 meters and are governed by ISSF rules.
  • Athletes can complete in SASP through college age, and there are several college teams throughout the nation.

Every athlete must have a parent present at all practices and matches, no exceptions.

All athletes must be registered members of SASP for insurance purposes. If you want to try out the program before registering, this is perfectly acceptable.

Athletes will be allowed two “free” practices as a guest of the coach, but by the third practice all athletes must be registered in the SASP system and verified by the coach.
