Golden Triangle Gun Club Across The Course Matches

Sponsored by the Golden Triangle Gun Club

What is Across-the-Course (XTC)?

XTC matches test a shooter’s ability to fire accurate, controlled shots at multiple distances and positions in one match. You shoot the same rifle through a series of stages at 200, 300, and 600 yards, switching positions and time limits along the way.

The big idea: it’s not just marksmanship—it’s position, wind reading, transitions, and mental discipline.

Course of Fire (Typical 80-Shot Match)

200 Yards

Standing (Offhand) – Slow Fire

  • 2 sighters

  • 20 shots for record

  • Time limit: usually 20 minutes

  • No sling support allowed

  • This is the hardest stage for most shooters—pure fundamentals

Standing → Sitting or Prone – Rapid Fire

  • 2 sighters

  • 2 strings of 10 shots

  • Time limit: 60 seconds per string

  • Start standing, drop into position, reload from a magazine change

  • Sling allowed

300 Yards

Standing → Prone – Rapid Fire

  • 2 sighters

  • 2 strings of 10 shots

  • Time limit: 70 seconds per string

  • Same rapid-fire flow, just stretched out

  • Wind starts to matter more here

600 Yards

Prone – Slow Fire

  • 2 sighters

  • 20 shots for record

  • Time limit: usually 20 minutes

  • Sling supported

  • Heavy emphasis on wind reading and consistency

Scoring with Electronic Targets

Instead of pit pullers and target carriers, electronic targets (e-targets) record every shot automatically.

What shooters see:

  • Exact shot location on a monitor or tablet

  • Numerical score (X, 10, 9, etc.)

  • Shot timing and grouping

  • Instant feedback—no waiting on pits

Benefits:

  • Faster matches

  • No pit duty

  • Great training feedback

  • Precise scoring (no close-call line cutters)

Scoring rings are the same as traditional paper targets—the electronics just measure where the bullet passes through the target plane.

Positions Used

  • Standing (Offhand) – unsupported, most challenging

  • Sitting – rapid fire at 200

  • Prone - rapid at 300

  • Prone – slow at 600

  • Sling allowed in all but standing

Rifles & Divisions

Common divisions include:

  • Service Rifle (AR-15, M1A, etc., per rulebook)

  • Match Rifle (more freedom in configuration)

Most shooters fire .223/5.56 or .308, depending on division and preference.

Why XTC Matters

Across-the-Course is often called the foundation of High Power rifle because it develops:

  • Solid fundamentals

  • Position building

  • Time management

  • Wind reading at distance

  • Match pressure skills

Even long-range specialists benefit hugely from XTC training.
