LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

For the year 2020, the LTC Range has now been separated from the Silhouette Range, as well as the 25 - 50 Yard Range through the use of concrete blocks. We added a target house for the LTC shooters and greatly improved the impact berm through raising the height to 14'. On the 25 - 50 Yard Range we rebuilt the impact berms and range divisions.  The Action Range berms were reworked and cleared while the field was graded, elevated and seeded.  The impact berms on the 100 - 200 Yard Range were rebuilt and some of the holes on the range itself were filled in. A new safety lighting system was installed on the 100 - 200 Yard Range warning that people are downrange when flashing. The fence line and wood line on the 600 Yard Range have been cleared, dirt brought in to the low areas.  On the Shotgun Range, several trees were removed and the edges straightened up.  On all Ranges, yellow safety lines were painted to indicate where to stand on a cold range. Other maintenance completed in 2020 included drainage improvements and clearing the summer vegetative growth on all berms. A maintenance plan has been developed to keep the weeds, bushes, and trees from growing while allowing grass to continue to prevent erosion.

Current projects underway include rebuilding the impact berms on the Silhouette Range. These berms have eroded over the years, where they are no more than two to three feet high. The 50, 100, 150, 200-meter impact berms will be raised to ten feet high, allowing the use of centerfire pistol caliber firearms to the range when completed. Plans also include the construction of two new Action Bays in the field next to the Activities Center. The bays will be used for training classes, IDPA, and other matches.

The 100/200 Yard Rifle Range was damaged in the recent Hurricane and therefore, we are currently rebuilding the covering and repairing the light system that we installed.

Most importantly, the Range Orientation program is finally in place and most of the membership has attended.

Thanks to all,

Ron Page

Member Orientation

Now that the membership renewal period for 2020 is over (September 1-30), the Club has reduced the number of Member Orientation classes down to two per month. We now offer a weekday evening class on the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 PM until 6:45 PM, and a weekend afternoon class on the third Sunday of each month from 3:00 PM until 4:15 PM. Remember that all existing and new members only have to attend this class once as long as you maintain continuous membership. We still a few existing members that haven’t taken the class. From now on, the focus will be on new members only. So, if you are an existing member and haven’t taken the class, do not delay waiting until the last minute as you may not be able to get in a class. Any existing member that hasn’t taken the class by March 31st , 2021, will have their membership suspended or revoked. To register for Orientation click here: Events

Most Recent, of Many Positive Comments about Orientation:

"I attended tonight's Orientation taught by
Ms. Heather.  I gotta say, I was a little peeved at having to go since I have been a member for 30 plus years. However, after attending, I was impressed!  It was conducted as professionally a meeting as I have ever attended, and in my time there have been many meetings.  I enjoyed it and since my retirement I plan on using it often.  Thanks for the good info.  It's apparent you folks have your act together!"

Training Opportunities at the Club

2021 offers many exciting training opportunities for members and the public that range from basic through the advanced pistol, rifle, shotgun, and personal defense courses.  Also, suppose you are looking to become an NRA certified instructor or range safety officer. In that case, the club has NRA certified training counselors and chief range safety officers to help you achieve that goal.

Classes are now in the process of being added to the Events page on the website. They include both online and in-person Texas License-to-Carry course, Basic Pistol, Handgun Fit, Ladies Only How to Conceal Carry, Defensive Pistol, Defensive Shotgun, Tactical Rifle and Pistol, and much more.

The club is also the host of several guest instructor courses by nationally recognized trainers, including Tatiana Whitlock, National Director of Training for A Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League, John Murphy of FPF Training, Tom Givens of Rangemaster Training Services, and Dave Spaulding of Handgun Combatives.  These are rare opportunities for you to receive training from the best of the best in the training services industry.

Ladies will not want to miss learning from Tatiana Whitlock.  She will be here in March, and her classes sell out quickly.

In early April, John Murphy will be teaching his two-day course “Concealed Carry: Street Encounter Skills and Tactics.  If you have your license to carry a handgun but have never taken any other class other than the State-mandated minimum 4-hour LTC class, this is the one other class you really need.  This course prepares you for real-life encounters by understanding criminal violence and then building the skills and tactics to meet those challenges.

For those wanting to become an instructor or advance their knowledge and skills as an instructor, Tom Givens will be here in late April for his “Instructor Development Course.”   It is 3-days of intensive learning and skill-building.  Many of the students will be traveling from out of town to attend this course.

Finally, Dave Spaulding will be returning to the club for the “Kinetic Combative Pistol” course.  Dave was here last October to a sold-out class.  It was one of the best classes that I have ever attended.  It will be the last opportunity for folks to attend one of his classes since he has decided to reduce his schedule and not travel anymore.

For more information, check out the ‘Training’ page on the club’s website to see the list of club approved instructors and their contact information.  To see the list of classes, you can go to the ‘Events’ page and scroll through or use the ‘Calendar View’ to see them listed by month or year.  Please note that the calendar is fluid as we add classes throughout the year.

Women's Program Report

The Pistolettes (GTGC Women’s Program) welcomed over 250 women 2020 though private instruction, Basic Pistol, Pistol 102, the License to Carry course, range time, and we even hosted our first, national instructor, Tatianna Whitlock, for two days where women learned more pistol skills and how to conceal carry on body.  What excites me the most is seeing more women wanting to learn how to on-body carry and finding great options in our Semi-Auto hand Gun Fit class where we bring out over 20 guns to palm and find a few good fitting guns for them.

Next year we are standardizing our schedule and all classes are now posted on the website Events page.  We will add specialty classes as they pop up but the main schedule has been posted.  We have added a new Ladies Only class, How to Conceal Carry where women will get to work out carry gear for many outfits and how to draw. During our hotter weather, we will host a shoot house indoor training event that will put you in a few real-life scenarios to get you thinking.  For more information, check the Events page or join our Facebook page, GTGC Pistolettes.

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Club has been revised and adopted by the Board in the November 2020 meeting.  The current SOP is on our website and you can access it here: SOP Rev. 10

Range Safety

We conducted two Range Safety Officer classes in 2020, certifying 30 new NRA Range Safety Officers bringing our total to 60.  RSO’s are ambassadors of the Club promoting good will, fellowship, firearm safety education, and occasional enforcement when needed.

The RSO’s report a noticeable decrease in safety violations since the Member Orientation classes began.  However, there are a couple of issues that that we still see:

First, members who bring guests to the range do not adequately supervise their guests, leading to some very serious safety issues.  Remember that the member is responsible for the actions of their guests.

Second, poor safe gun handling leading to muzzles pointed in unsafe directions. Remember the Firing Line Safety Rules:
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
ALWAYS keep the action open while people are downrange.
NEVER handle firearms while people are downrange.

You are responsible for reading, understanding, and following the Standard Operating Procedures.  RSO’s will not be as lenient on violators, particularly now that you have attended member orientation and no longer have the usual “Oh, I didn’t know” excuse.

Safety First, Last, and Always!
